Matthew Butterick's Practical Typography

Poke around this website - you will learn something.

Butterick explains type to lawyers and other non-specialists, but he explains things many design students need to learn. Also note that it is a very readable website.

Jack Kirby's Legacy

The Auburn Avenue Research Library will host Afrofuturistic Freedom Dreams, a community discussion facilitated by Associate Professor of Visual Studies at the State University of New York at Buffalo, Dr. John Jennings. Dr. Jennings will discuss the legacy of comic book illustrator, Jack Kirby, and the contemporary black artists who remix Kirby’s style with formal and conceptual influences, to explore themes like Afrofuturism, social justice, and racial identity. This event will also include an in-depth discussion on the upcoming exhibit, Hotlantis: An Afrofuturistic Pop Art Exhibition of Cosmic Proportions, at the Fulton County Southwest Arts Center (May 3 – July 19).

Michael Cronan, namer and designer of Tivo identity
"In the spring of 1997, he was asked to forge a name and an identity for a new device, a digital video recorder developed by a company called Teleworld that offered more sophisticated television recording choices than the videocassette recorder.
“We reviewed probably 1,600-plus name alternatives, seriously considered over 800 names and presented over 100 strong candidates to the team,” Mr. Cronan told Matt Haughey for his blog PVR (the letters stand for personal video recorder) in 2005."

George Lois also named businesses and wrote slogans in addition to his graphic designs

I pulled together examples of a simple logo represented in different ways (signage, digitally, embroidery, etc.). Hopefully, this shows you the importance of thinking about execution in tandem with design.

Interview Questions

Hey everyone,

Here are a few examples of questions you could ask during your interview. Keep in mind that not all of these are appropriate, so please read through each of them and decide what works for your objectives. Also, listen to their answers—they may address multiple questions at one time, and you don’t want to sound redundant! Good luck!

  • How old is your company?
  • How did your company begin, and is there a story that is unique to your company?
  • Who is your target audience?
  • What do you want your audience to know right away about your company?
  • What are 10-20 adjectives that describe your company?
  • What is your company known for; what are clients/consumers saying about your company?
  • Does your company have a philosophy or mission statement? If so, what is it?
  • Do you consider your company casual, business-casual, or all business?
  • If your company were a car, what brand would it be and why? (Examples: Mercedes—corporate and sophisticated / VW Bug—whimsical and on trend / Accord—practical and mainstream)
  • What aspect(s) of your company’s image need improvement?
  • What aspects of your company’s image need more brand representation?
  • Who are your competitors (locally/regionally/nationally)? And, how are those competitors better/worse than your company?
  • What is the structure/format of your company?
  • What are your company’s growth goals for the coming years?
