Spring semester class in Film /Video

From Niklas Vollmer: I am offering Community-Based Media Production (Film 4125/Comm 6125) again this coming Spring semester, which will make for a rich and unique collaboration involving cross-cultural exchange via Skype and digital web and video production. The class meets on Tuesdays from 11am to 12:40pm and Thursdays form 11am to 2:30pm.

Class participants will begin by producing a local Metro Atlanta-based digital video or web-based project -- and then be collaborating with film and art students from two major universities in the country of Colombia. The course curriculum builds in an end-of-the semester public screening to a sizable and enthusiastic Metro Atlanta audience. The international component also likely ensures screenings in South America!

Technology-wise, we will be using JVC HD cameras and have access to a lab housing Macs with Final Cut Pro and other web and graphic design software.

As Community-Based Media is an advanced video production class that focuses on collaborative cross-cultural exchange and storytelling via digital media (the web, mobile media and video, for example), the class is best served by being populated with students who have production skills and/or community outreach backgrounds.

If interested, please briefly discuss:
- your digital video, audio or web design/production skill set and any other related creative abilities
- related courses that you have taken at GSU or elsewhere
- any community outreach, advocacy and volunteering or cross-cultural background and experiences
- anything else that makes you qualified for the class

Please also note your:
- major and minor
- standing (sophomore, junior, senior, grad student, etc.)
- overall GSU GPA
- your Panther ID # (for course authorization purposes)

Please send me your Panther ID # and responses by 10am on Monday, November 23rd if your are interested in registering for the class.

Ecofont

This interesting font claims to be comprised of tiny dots which are invisible when you print, but can save up to %20 more ink for printed text-only documents.

It seems interesting and worth a gather and a try.

The font is currently nominated for the "Accenture Innovation Awards 2009".

Parking Deck Space Gets Exalted™ Makeover
download flyer
Oct. 7, 2009 (ATLANTA, GA) While many people associate parking decks as a gray no-man's land existing between their vehicle and their destination, on Oct. 7 at Georgia State University, nothing could be farther from the truth “ at least between 1-6 p.m.
During this time, the G-parking deck, on Level 3, will be transformed into one of the most distinct parking deck oddities in existence – a shrine to one of America’s most common, yet greatest cultural obsessions. The exhibit invites participates to watch, join in, or simply absorb the satirical perception.
The shrine is a parody on modern values created by a collaboration of Georgia State University’s Art and Design MFA candidates, including those in the photography, interior design and graphic design departments.
Visitors are encouraged to visit the free event and to take part in the fun and the documentation process. For more information contact Jim Chapman at 770-530-9671.

Art & Copy
A Film About Advertising and Creativity
Wednesday, September 23rd
7:45 pm
The Plaza Theatre
An AIGA Special Film Screening

ART & COPY is a powerful new film about advertising and inspiration. Directed by Doug Pray (SURFWISE, SCRATCH, HYPE!), it reveals the work and wisdom of some of the most influential advertising creatives of our time - people who've profoundly impacted our culture, yet are virtually unknown outside their industry.
Exploding forth from advertising's "creative revolution" of the 1960s, these artists and writers all brought a surprisingly rebellious spirit to their work in a business more often associated with mediocrity or manipulation: George Lois, Mary Wells, Dan Wieden, Lee Clow, Hal Riney and others featured in ART & COPY were responsible for "Just Do It," "I Love NY," "Where's the Beef?," "Got Milk," "Think Different," and brilliant campaigns for everything from cars to presidents. They managed to grab the attention of millions and truly move them.
Visually interwoven with their stories, TV satellites are launched, billboards are erected, and the social and cultural impact of their ads are brought to light in this dynamic exploration of art, commerce, and human emotion.
The film is playing at the Plaza September 18-24th. Special AIGA screening is September 23rd. Presented in 35mm.
No advanced registration for this event. Tickets are available at The Plaza Theatre Box Office.
Student Members $6.50
Members $6.50
General Admission $8.00

What size margins? What size gutters?

Check my addition
horizontally:
Two 3p0 margins top, bottom, left and right (2 x 3p0)
Two 1p9 gutters between the columns (2 x 1p9)
Three 7p10 wide columns (3 x 7p10)
= 33p0 page width.

vertically:
top and bottom margins (2 x 3p0)
45p0 column depth (1 x 45p0)
= 51p0 page height.

So how many lines of type do you get in each column?
If unsure, import the grid from the handout into your indesign document and trace over it.

Hand Washing Prevents Swine Flu H1N1 Infection
Washing Hands Stops the Spread of Influenza A H1N1 of Swine Origin

© Dr. Vandana Bhide, 2009
Liquid soap is preferred
Handwashing is the single most important measure to prevent the spread of infections, including swine flu. 15-20 seconds of hand washing is recommended to remove germs.

Good Hand washing is one of the most important infection control measures to prevent the spread of swine flu H1N1. Alcohol based gels also kill influenza viruses. Most people do not wash their hands as thoroughly as needed to prevent the spread of infection.

Proper Hand Washing Technique

First, rinse hands with water. Then use a good amount of soap and rub hands together to form a lather. Next rub the dorsum (top) of each hand with the palm of the opposite hand. With fingers palm side together, spread the fingers apart and interlock them, rubbing them against each other. Then make sure that every part of each individual finger, including regions between the fingers (interdigital) is cleaned. The thumb, which is a commonly missed area, should be washed. The fingertips are also commonly missed during hand washing.

Since bacteria hide under nails, it is important to wash the nails. A nail brush, often used by surgeons performing a surgical scrub, can help remove the dirt that accumulates under fingernails. Alternatively, the nails on one hand can be used to remove the dirt under the fingernails of the other hand. Then the fingernails of one hand can be rubbed against the palm of the other hand to clean the fingernails.

Each wrist should be lathered and rubbed as well.
Sing Happy Birthday Twice to Yourself
The hands and wrist should be rubbed with soap to a lather for at least 20 seconds. Singing the "Happy Birthday" song twice will roughly approximate the amount of time required to adequately wash hands. The hands should be rinsed thoroughly with clean water. Ideally, warm water is used to wash and rinse hands.

Sketches for next Tuesday can be on any size paper, but think about what size you will want your final drawing to be. If you don't have a big piece of board yet, draw a 10.75" x 16.75" rectangle on your table, and lay your sketch in the middle of it. This will give you an idea of how big you want your word to be. - Liz
