Your questions about Thinking with Type

Hi GRD3150 students
I am expecting to see your questions posted here very soon! You are responsible for material to page 43 this week. Be sure to read over pp. 34 - 43 especially carefully.

You will have to become a blogspot member in order to post, but this is free.
cheers
Liz

1. Does every counter have a corresponding bowl? I notice the "a" is clearly marked as having a bowl and a counter...but the "o" is not. Sad o. Lonely o. Step-o.

2. On page 45, the last sentence delineates three punishable type crimes. As far as the "pseudo bold" and bold go, it looks like the major problem with "faking" the bold type is in the spacing between the letters, after looking closely at the i, the a, the f, and the l.

3. It seems in this book the words "typeface" and "font" are fairly interchangeable. However, I recently read an http://www.aiga.org/content.cfm/theyre-not-fonts article that was rather adamant about these words being vastly different things. Weigh in?

I can't seem to post on this blog, only comment. However, why do sans-serif families come in more weights and sizes than serif families? Is it because of the serif itself, or is it because of some governing convention that I'm unaware of?

And about bitmap fonts: What happens to the font if it is not displayed in multiples of its root size? Will the proportions be all screwed up, or will it just snap to a multiple of its root?
